Spring is finally here! After having the "ive gotta go catchin flu" for the past 2 months, along with my thumb being too soft for my liking due to the lack of bass thumb from grasping largemouths by the lip, i decided to take out my Old Town Saranac146 equipped with Scotty rod holders and Hummingbird Fishin Buddy Max. Lake St. Clair Metro Park was my destination to see if the largemouths have turned up n the canals yet.
Sure enough there were a lot of guys catching White crappie on live minnows off the bank so i decided to try out the new Yumbrella ultralight tripod with white grubs and caught 2 nice license plates! But i fish for sport. Not to slice and dice good sized panfish for a few bites of greasy fish.
I decided to move way to the back of the canal where the boat launch is located and the water was 3 degrees warmer than the lake. I dropped anchor and rigged up my go to bait for early spring when the water is still cold. Zoom 8" lizard in green pumpkin with a 1/4" tungsten bullet weight and a 4/O gamakatsu offset ewg.
First cast right into the weeds and reeled in a 4.3 lb chunker! Well alright then. They like the presentation and the color. Nearly every other cast i was pulling in some nice biggins.
Then Whaaammm!! My Lews 6.9. Medium fast taper pole with Suffix 30lb braided line nearly snaps immediately in half. Like any other truely fish addicted dummy would do, i try fighting this monster of a fish and reel away. I couldnt believe the fight i was recieving. Dragging my canoe and anchor around. Then i seen it. A muskie!! A muskie in a canal only 9 ft. Deep in the beginning of April? Awesome! Come here big mama! Then Snap goes my tip on my brand new spinning rod.
Then it hits me. My rods broke. Ive got a muskie on my line, in a canoe with only a small Frabil net. Sadly i had no choice but to cut my line. I continued to fish a couple more hours with senkos and lizards catching more chunkers for an awesome first time out for the season. Ill be back. And ill be prepared...

Smallmouth fishing was slow but steady off of St. Clair shores in 15-16ft of water. Fish averaged 3 pounds, and were hitting on crankbaits and drop shots.
