The Kern River has been fair to good for trout with weekly plants in sections 4 through 6, and all other sections received trout this week and two weeks ago. The quality of the planted trout has been excellent with a lot of two to four-pound class rainbows. Best bite on the planted trout has been spinners, crickets, and salmon eggs. For fly anglers, the bite is fair to good, especially in the upper river near Johnsondale Bridge for wild fish with a major crane fly hatch lasting all day and an afternoon blue-wing olive hatch with some surface trout activity. Flows coming in are back down to 1,100 cfs with cooler weather but are likely to shoot back up to 1,800 or more as it warms up next week. The lower river is 700 to 800 cfs (highest in three or four years) and the water is off color. Trout spotty, but a few bass and catfish are starting to show as water temperatures rise. The bite is tougher on bait like crickets and salmon eggs. For fly anglers, the bite is fair to good, especially in the upper river near Johnsondale Bridge for wild fish with a major crane fly hatch lasting all day and an afternoon blue-wing olive hatch with some surface trout activity. The lower river is still low and the bite is slow on species other than planted trout. A few bass and catfish are starting to show as water temperatures rise.
