Anglers continue to see good walleye action along weed lines and in pockets within weed beds. Productive techniques have included trolling with worm harnesses and jigging with blade baits or jigs tipped with a leech or nightcrawler. Musky are available along weed edges. Troll with large stickbaits or position boat outside weed beds and cast oversized jerkbaits and bucktail spinners over the weed beds. Anglers continue to report excellent yellow perch fishing around the lake. Use medium sized shiners to select for larger perch. Largemouth bass are typically available in nearshore areas and around docks. Shallow diving stickbaits, spinnerbaits, tube jigs, plastics, surface plugs and live shiners are good bass baits.

Chautauqua Lake ranks among the top bass lakes in New York State. The shallow, weedy areas and docks offer exceptional cover for largemouth bass. Boaters and shore anglers do best by keying on these areas where bass wait to ambush prey. Early morning and evening are the prime times for surface-type plugs. Anglers also have good luck using spinner baits, plastic worms, jig-and-pigs, crank baits and live bait, such as crayfish and shiners. Although less abundant than largemouth, smallmouth bass can offer good action for those fishing the right spots. Deep drop-offs, points, rocky shoals, gravel bars near creek mouths and the islands in the south basin have proven to be the most productive areas for smallmouth bass. When fishing over deeper structure, a drop-shot rig with crayfish, shiners or plastics work well.

Got out on Chautauquua and cruised around the north basin on Saturday May 2nd. Saw very little if any new weed growth thus far. Water temps we saw ranged from 49 to 53 degrees. Water clatity was nice but not as clear as I expected for this time of year. Lots of Crappie being caught in the canals. We did a couple hour walleye troll from 9:30 till 11:30 saturday evening. Picked up one 24 incher in about 7 feet of water trolling over a rock bottom area.
